Monica Prasad’s areas of interest are economic sociology, comparative historical sociology, and political sociology. Her books The Politics of Free Markets, The Land of Too Much, and Starving the Beast examine American political economy in comparative perspective, and argue that progressive policies are most effective when they are embedded in a broader political economy that is favorable to business interests.
She is the author of Problem-Solving Sociology, a guide for students wanting to conduct problem-driven social research.
Prasad is the recipient of several awards, including a Fulbright, a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, fellowships from the Russell Sage Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation, and several book and article awards from three scholarly associations.
